Magnolia stellata 'Waterlily' (Star magnolia)
'Waterlily' is a compact, rounded, deciduous shrub or small tree with oblong to narrowly elliptic, mid-green leaves and, in spring before or as the leaves emerge, silky buds opening to star-shaped, white flowers with spreading petals.
Grow in moist but well-drained, humus-rich, preferably neutral to acid soil in sun or partial shade with shelter from strong winds. Mulch with leaf mould and manure in early spring. Will reach a height of 6m and a spread of 5m after 20-50 years.
